How old do you have to be to play hockey?

Hockey is for all ages. You can play hockey for a club from the age of 5. Most clubs have junior competitions from Under 7 until the age of 17. You can then progress to Under 18 / Under 21 and Open comps for Men & Women.

What is Hookin2Hockey?


Hookin2Hockey is Hockey Australia’s national junior program for boys and girls aged 5yrs to 10yrs old. Hookin2Hockey gives young boys and girls the opportunity to learn the basic skills of hockey, develop fundamental motor skills and make friends all while beginning their lifelong love of hockey! What hockey gear does my child need?

To get started in hockey, all you will need is a mouth guard, shin pads, hockey stick and a ball if you want to practice at home. You can discuss where to purchase this equipment at your local association. Click here to get their contact information.

How do I register my child to play hockey?

All you have to do is contact your local hockey association. They will provide you with information and contact details for all clubs in your area.  From there you can register your child with any club you choose.

What if my child has never played hockey before – will they be OK?

Hockey is very accommodating to all new players.  The sport caters for all levels from the beginner to the elite and encourages participation, fun and development. It is a true family sport for all ages.

So why play Hockey?

Hockey is played by over 200,000 people across Australia with over 14,000 registered players in Queensland alone. These players belong to hockey associations and hockey clubs based across the state.

It is a great way for kids to keep fit, make new friends and have fun.  And who knows, one day they might even play at the Olympics!
